My Angel had to leave me 26 Jan 2019; we spent 14 years living side by side, her needs were easily communicated if you knew how to interpret, mine even more so, I was fine with my friend by my side.
I watched Poppy age in front of my eyes, and I adapted her care, I openly would mention Poppy was getting old now.
I now know I was trying to prepare myself.
Our connection was unexplainable, with a fake sneeze she would tell me her needs, or with the pawing of my leg, she would remind me we were a duo, a team.
Time caught us up so very quickly, whilst we had our afternoon or morning or evening nap. Our joints stiffened our hair/fur dulled. Those beautiful eyes near dimmed.
I watched every move you made, I preempted your every need, carrying you to the loo, to bed, downstairs, cuddled you whilst getting fresh air.
I wouldn't ever let you suffer, but I didn't know, I often counselled you to "Go" if you needed to. I hoped I never had to make that decision.
Then I heard you whimper, I knew what I had to do. I held you wrapped in your blanky wouldn't let them near, I was being selfish,
You'd given me 14 years of devotion, of total love and loyalty.
I had never had a friend like you.
I had to say Thank you my darling. Your job is done but stay close on the other side until my time arrives.
Rest for now my Poppy, for our fun and laughter will return. We will love and be together when our time comes once again.
I'm broken without you, my Angel.

As I sit here, teary eye, all I can say is please accept our heartfelt sympathy for your loss. Anyone who has ever owned a Shih Tzu and reads your story can't help but be moved by your words. We all relate and know the time will come for our own "Poppys" to leave us, all the while wondering why their lives are so much shorter than our own.
Thank you so much for sharing.
